Biography

Kiran Shah is a Kenyan-born British actor, stuntman, scale double and performer whose career in film and television spans several decades. Born on 28 September 1956 in Nairobi, Kenya, Shah developed an interest in cinema at an early age and went on to work on some of the biggest fantasy, science-fiction and adventure productions in international cinema. He is particularly recognized for his work in The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia, Superman, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter.

Early Life

Kiran Jethalal Shah was born in Nairobi to an Indian family. He spent his early childhood in Kenya before moving to India with his family when he was around 12 years old. His exposure to Indian cinema during his childhood helped develop his fascination with acting and filmmaking. Later, his family moved to the United Kingdom, where Shah began pursuing opportunities in the entertainment industry.

Beginning of His Career

Shah entered the film industry during the 1970s. One of his earliest film credits came with Candleshoe (1977), initially working as a stand-in. His abilities soon attracted the attention of stunt professionals, and stunt coordinator Bob Anderson encouraged him to undertake stunt work as well. That opportunity helped establish his career as both an actor and stunt performer.

He subsequently appeared in The People That Time Forgot (1977), playing Bolum. During the following years, he built a reputation for performing demanding physical work and portraying characters that required a performer of his distinctive stature and versatility.

Career in Major Films

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Shah worked on a wide range of major productions. His credits included Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), The Dark Crystal (1982), Return of the Jedi (1983), Legend (1985), Aliens (1986), Braveheart (1995) and Titanic (1997). His work included acting, stunt performance, stand-in work and doubling.

His versatility allowed him to take on roles that ranged from fantasy creatures and unusual characters to stunt and scale-double assignments. He also worked on productions such as The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Black Beauty and The Sign of Four.
