Vaidy S. Pillai

Biography

Vaidy Somasundaram, also known as Vaidy S., is an Indian cinematographer who has worked predominantly in the Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film industries. He is known for his visual work across films in different genres and languages.

After graduating in film technology and cinematography from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute, Chennai, Vaidy began his career as a cinematographer in Malayalam cinema with Kanne Madanguka. He later worked with filmmaker A. K. Lohithadas on Kasthuri Maan.

Vaidy subsequently established a strong presence in Tamil cinema. His collaborations with director Boopathy Pandian include Thiruvilaiyaadal Aarambam (2006), which became a commercial success, as well as Malaikottai (2007) and Pattathu Yaanai (2013).

He also became prominent in Kannada cinema through films such as Googly (2013), Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014) and Rana Vikrama (2015). His cinematography in Googly earned him the SIIMA Award for Best Kannada Cinematographer, and he won the same award again for Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari.

Vaidy has also collaborated with director P. C. Shekar on films including Romeo (2012) and Raaga (2017). His career reflects a successful transition across Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada cinema, with his cinematography contributing to several commercially successful South Indian films.

With his work spanning multiple languages and collaborations with prominent filmmakers, Vaidy Somasundaram has established himself as a notable cinematographer in South Indian cinema.
