Sundarnath Suvarna

Biography

Sundarnath Suvarna (7 March 1950 – 10 December 2013) was an Indian cinematographer, producer, and film director who worked predominantly in Kannada cinema. He was one of the prominent cinematographers of the Kannada film industry and contributed to more than 150 films in Kannada and Tulu cinema.

Career

Sundarnath Suvarna began working in the film industry in the late 1960s and established himself as a cinematographer during the late 1970s and 1980s. His cinematography credits include films such as Udugore (1979), Anubhava (1984), Bandha Muktha (1987), Matru Vatsalya (1988), Lockup Death (1994), Maduve (1997), Gowdru (2004), Gandugali Kumara Rama (2006), Mussanjemaatu (2008), Kallara Santhe (2009), and Mahanadhi (2013).

He also worked in Tulu cinema, including Bangar Patler (1993) and September 8 (1994). His versatility as a cinematographer allowed him to work across dramas, action films, family stories, and socially themed productions.

Suvarna occasionally moved beyond cinematography into filmmaking. He directed Tiger Gangu (1990), using the name K. Sundarnath Suvarna, and also received directing and producing credits on earlier projects.

Awards and Recognition

Sundarnath Suvarna's contribution to Kannada cinematography was recognized with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award. He also received the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Cinematographer for Kallara Santhe for the 2009–10 award period.

Death

Sundarnath Suvarna died in Bengaluru on 10 December 2013, aged 63, after battling cancer. He left behind a substantial body of work and is remembered as an important cinematographer in Kannada and Tulu cinema.
