Biography

Sumita Sanyal (9 October 1945 – 9 July 2017) was an Indian actress who worked mainly in Bengali cinema and also appeared in several Hindi films. Known for her graceful performances and natural acting style, she was a prominent actress during the 1960s and 1970s.

 

 

Born as Manjula Sanyal in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, she began her acting career in Bengali films and quickly became recognized for her talent. She made her film debut with Khokababur Pratyabartan and went on to work in many successful Bengali productions.

Sumita Sanyal became widely known for her role as Aruna Kothari in Anand, where she starred alongside Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Her performance in the film remains one of her most remembered Hindi film appearances.

 

 

Her other notable films include Guddi, Aashirwad, Sagina Mahato, Kuheli, and Nayika Sangbad. She worked with several celebrated filmmakers and actors, including Satyajit Ray, Uttam Kumar, and Soumitra Chatterjee.

 

 

After a successful career in films, Sumita Sanyal gradually moved away from acting and lived a private life. She passed away on 9 July 2017 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She is remembered as a talented performer whose work enriched both Bengali and Hindi cinema.
