Sudipto Sen

Biography

Sudipto is an acclaimed Indian filmmaker, documentary maker, and storyteller known for his socially and politically charged cinema. Born in a small rural hamlet in Jalpaiguri, northeastern India, he transformed an ambitious childhood dream into a celebrated career spanning documentaries, independent feature films, and socio-political narratives.

Early Life and Education

Sudipto’s journey into filmmaking began just after completing his final school exams, when the idea of becoming a filmmaker first took root. His academic path was diverse—he initially studied Physics, then Applied Psychology, and finally pursued formal film education. This combination of sciences, human behavior, and cinematic training allowed him to develop a unique approach to storytelling, treating the camera as a pen to craft narratives.

Rise Through Documentaries

Sudipto first gained national recognition with his experimental documentary The Other Wealth, which explored land mafia activity near Kolkata. The documentary’s selection in multiple international film festivals marked a turning point, bringing him overnight success. Subsequently, he signed a long-term contract with the World Bank, producing films about their activities in Southeast Asia.

During this period, Sudipto, a trained mountaineer and avid traveler, traversed over 200,000 km across the Indian subcontinent, exploring remote corners of India, which he later describes as a formative experience that fueled his cinematic vision.

Independent Feature Films

Seeking creative independence, Sudipto made his directorial debut with the feature film The Last Monk (2006). The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and screened at over 27 international festivals, including Rotterdam, Raindance, and Singapore International Film Festival, earning numerous accolades.

Other notable works include:

Akhnoor (French co-production): Won Best Film at the Golden Gate Film Festival, Special Jury Award at the San Francisco Film Festival, and recognition from the Belgian Government.

Corentin’s Quest (French co-production)

Anthiponnovettam (Malayalam, German co-production)

Between 2015–2019, he worked on two Hindi independent features, Aasma and Lucknow Times, whose releases were delayed due to the pandemic.

Recent Work and Commercial Success

Sudipto’s The Kerala Story was declared an “Unprecedented Blockbuster” within 10 days of release, grossing INR 400 crore at the box office. His other recent Hindi feature, Bastar: The Naxal Story, explores the Maoist movement and human rights challenges in Chhattisgarh, India. Both films are available on ZEE5 OTT, where they have ranked among the platform’s top 10 releases for months.

Controversial and Award-Winning Documentaries

In the Name of Love (2018): A documentary on religious conversion and “Love Jihad,” awarded Best Film at the London Independent Film Festival.

Krantdarshi Guruji (2021): A film on sculptor-visionary Guruji Ravindra Sharma, which received the 67th National Film Award.

Gurujana: Selected for the Indian Panorama section at IFFI’67.
