Sohrab Noshirvani

Biography

Sohrab Noshirvani is an Iranian-American screenwriter, producer, and filmmaker known for his work in political thrillers, drama, and large-scale action films. Originally from Iran, he later emigrated to the United States and pursued his passion for filmmaking through formal study at Columbia University, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in film in 2012. During his time at Columbia, he met British writer Rory Haines, beginning a creative partnership that would shape much of his professional career.

Noshirvani started his career working on independent films and short projects, gaining experience not only as a writer but also in cinematography and film production. His early work included short films such as Dry River Road, Junkyard Dogs, Junkyard July, and Junkyard Jesus, which demonstrated his interest in grounded storytelling and dramatic themes.

His collaboration with Rory Haines gained industry attention with the screenplay From Here to Albion, which appeared on the Black List of notable unproduced screenplays and was later acquired by Participant Media. The duo continued to develop original projects, including The State, Revenge at a Wedding, and The Narrows, establishing themselves as promising screenwriters in both television and film.

Noshirvani achieved wider recognition with the BBC thriller series Informer (2018), which he co-created and wrote alongside Haines. The series explored issues of identity, surveillance, and counterterrorism and received strong critical acclaim, including a BAFTA nomination for Best Drama Series.

His breakthrough in feature films came with The Mauritanian (2021), adapted from Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s memoir Guantánamo Diary. The film, starring Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, and Benedict Cumberbatch, earned praise for its powerful storytelling and screenplay. Noshirvani later co-wrote Black Adam (2022), bringing his writing talents to a major superhero blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson.

Known for blending political themes, suspense, and emotional depth, Sohrab Noshirvani has become an increasingly influential voice in contemporary screenwriting, working across both prestige television and Hollywood cinema.
