Shree Narayan Singh, born on July 30, 1971, in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, is an Indian film director and editor renowned for his commitment to highlighting pressing social issues through mainstream cinema.

 

Early Career and Editing Work

Singh commenced his career in the film industry as an editor, contributing to several notable Bollywood films. His editing credits include A Wednesday (2008), Special 26 (2013), Baby (2015), Rustom (2016), and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016). His proficiency in editing laid a strong foundation for his transition into directing.​

 

Directorial Ventures

Singh made his directorial debut with Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai in 2012. However, it was Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) that brought him widespread acclaim. Starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, the film addressed the critical issue of sanitation and open defecation in rural India. The movie was both a commercial success and a catalyst for social change, grossing over ₹2 billion worldwide.

 

Continuing his focus on societal themes, Singh directed Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018), featuring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, and Yami Gautam. The film tackled the problem of inflated electricity bills and power theft in small towns.

 

Digital Endeavors and Upcoming Projects

Expanding into digital media, Singh directed the web series Sutliyan (2022) for ZEE5. The series delves into the complexities of family relationships and the emotional dynamics of a reunion.

 

Singh is also set to direct a film based on a real-life murder case involving a Bollywood actress, with the narrative focusing on a journalist's year-long investigation that uncovers the truth.
