S.A. Chandrashekhar
Biography
S. A. Chandrashekhar is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and actor who has worked predominantly in Tamil cinema. He was born on July 2, 1945, in Tamil Nadu, India. Over a career spanning several decades, he became known for directing socially themed, action-oriented and family dramas.
Chandrashekhar directed more than 60 films and also worked in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi cinema. Some of his notable directorial works include Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Vetri, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Sattam Oru Vilayattu, Senthoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva, Once More, Nenjinile, Nenjirukkum Varai, Touring Talkies and Capmaari.
He played an important role in the early career of his son, actor Vijay, directing him in films such as Naalaiya Theerpu (1992), Senthoorapandi (1993), Rasigan (1994), Deva (1995) and Vishnu (1995). Chandrashekhar also worked as a writer and screenwriter on several projects, including Rasigan, Deva, Once More, Maanbumigu Maanavan and Jeevan Ki Shatranj.
Alongside filmmaking, he has appeared as an actor in numerous films. His acting credits include Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985), Deva (1995), Priyamudan (1998), Kodi (2016), Aarudhra (2018), Traffic Ramasamy (2018), Maanaadu (2021), Tamilkkudimagan (2023) and Kooran (2025).
His work has made him an important figure in Tamil commercial cinema, particularly through his long association with socially driven stories and his contribution to the early filmmaking career of Vijay.
