Early Life and Education

Randall Wallace was born on July 28, 1949, in Jackson, Tennessee, and raised in Memphis. He pursued his education at Duke University, where he studied religion and Russian, a combination that reflected his early fascination with storytelling, spirituality, and cultural depth. After college, he explored various careers, including songwriting and novel writing, before finding his path in screenwriting.

 

Breakthrough with Braveheart

Wallace achieved major success with the screenplay for Braveheart (1995), the epic tale of Scottish warrior William Wallace, which starred Mel Gibson. The film became a massive critical and commercial hit, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Wallace’s emotionally charged and inspirational script earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, propelling him into the spotlight.

 

Directing Career

Following the success of Braveheart, Wallace expanded his career into directing. He made his directorial debut with The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), a historical drama featuring Leonardo DiCaprio in dual roles.
