Ramanand Sagar (29 December 1917 – 12 December 2005) was an Indian film director, producer, writer, and television producer. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Indian entertainment. He is best known for creating the iconic television series Ramayan (1987–1988), which became one of the most-watched shows in Indian television history.
Before achieving success on television, Ramanand Sagar built a distinguished career in Hindi cinema as a writer, director, and producer. He wrote and directed several successful films, including Aankhen (1968), Geet (1970), Lalkar (1972), Charas (1976), and Arzoo (1965). His films were known for their engaging storytelling, memorable music, and strong emotional appeal.
In the late 1980s, Sagar revolutionized Indian television with Ramayan, which brought the Hindu epic to millions of viewers across the country. The series became a cultural phenomenon and established his production house, Sagar Arts, as one of India's leading television production companies.
Ramanand Sagar received numerous honors for his contributions to Indian cinema and television. His legacy continues through his timeless films and television productions, which remain popular with audiences across generations.
