Biography

Ouseppachan (born 13 September 1955) is an Indian film composer, violinist and singer who has predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. Born Mechery Louis Ouseppachan in Ollur, Thrissur, he is regarded as one of the prominent music composers in Malayalam films.

Early Life and Musical Career

Ouseppachan began his musical journey as a violinist, performing with music groups including Voice of Trichur. He later worked as a violinist with renowned musicians and eventually moved into film music. His early film work included providing background music for Eenam, while he also played violin and contributed music to Aaravam (1979).

His breakthrough as an independent music director came with Kathodu Kathoram (1985), directed by Bharathan. The film's songs became highly popular and helped establish Ouseppachan as a leading composer.

Career and Notable Works

Over his career, Ouseppachan has composed music for more than 200 films, while also creating background scores and non-film music. Some of his notable works include Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam, Ore Kadal, Nadan, and numerous other Malayalam productions.

His compositions are particularly noted for their melodic quality and the influence of his background as a violinist. He has also contributed background scores to Hindi films and worked on non-film albums, including devotional music.

Awards and Recognition

Ouseppachan has received several major honours for his contribution to Indian film music. He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Ore Kadal (2007). He has also received Filmfare Award South recognition and multiple Kerala State Film Awards, including awards for Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam, Ore Kadal and Nadan.

Beyond composing, Ouseppachan has appeared as a judge on television music programmes, including Idea Star Singer and Gandharva Sangeetham.
