Biography

Nargis, born Fatima Rashid on 1 June 1929 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India, was one of the most celebrated actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Known for her natural acting style and emotional depth, she became one of Hindi cinema's biggest stars during the 1940s and 1950s.

Nargis made her screen debut as a child artist in Talash-e-Haq (1935) and appeared in her first leading role in Takdeer (1943). She rose to prominence with a series of successful films, especially alongside Raj Kapoor. Their collaborations in Aag (1948), Barsaat (1949), Andaz (1949), Awaara (1951), Aah (1953), Shree 420 (1955), and Chori Chori (1956) are regarded as classics of Hindi cinema.

Her most acclaimed performance came in Mother India (1957), directed by Mehboob Khan. Her portrayal of the resilient Radha earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and international recognition. The film became the first Indian film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

During the filming of Mother India, Nargis met actor Sunil Dutt, who famously rescued her from a fire on the set. They married in 1958 and had three children, including actor Sanjay Dutt. After her marriage, she largely stepped away from acting, returning only for the acclaimed drama Raat Aur Din (1967), for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress, becoming the first recipient of the honor.

Beyond films, Nargis was actively involved in social work and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, contributing to public welfare and cultural initiatives.

Nargis died of pancreatic cancer on 3 May 1981 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 51, just days before the release of her son Sanjay Dutt's debut film, Rocky (1981). She is remembered as one of the greatest actresses in Indian cinema, whose performances continue to inspire audiences and filmmakers alike.
