Moolchand

Biography

Moolchand Kapoor, popularly known simply as Moolchand, was a prolific character actor whose presence enlivened Hindi cinema from the 1950s through the 1980s. Known for his trademark portly build, expressive face, and natural comic timing, he appeared in over 250 films across a wide range of genres.

He was frequently associated with filmmakers like Guru Dutt and Raj Kapoor, contributing to several of their films in memorable supporting roles. Moolchand often portrayed characters such as loyal servants, comic sidekicks, or affable neighbors—roles that added warmth and humor to the narrative.

Among his notable film appearances are Padosan (1968), Do Raaste (1969), Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), and Don (1978). In Padosan, he played the servant to Om Prakash’s character, delivering a performance that highlighted his flair for understated comedy. His later roles, including appearances alongside stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman, further showcased his ability to leave a lasting impression even in brief roles.

Though he never rose to leading-man status, Moolchand became a familiar and beloved face in Indian cinema. Much of his personal life remains undocumented, adding an air of mystery to his legacy. He passed away in the 1980s, and some films released around that time credited him posthumously as “Late Moolchand.”

Despite limited recognition in mainstream histories, Moolchand’s contributions endure. He is fondly remembered as one of the many unsung character actors who helped define the charm and texture of classic Bollywood.
