Biography
Mike Berlucchi is an American cinematographer who has built a career working on feature films, television series, music videos and commercial productions. He is recognized for his work behind the camera and for collaborating with directors on projects that combine visual storytelling with distinctive cinematic styles. His professional credits include comedy, drama, fantasy and science-fiction productions.
Early Life and Education
Mike Berlucchi was born on September 15, 1987, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. He grew up in Michigan and developed an interest in photography at an early age. According to an interview published by the American Society of Cinematographers, his father designed camera rigs for crash testing at General Motors and brought home discarded Nikon cameras and lenses when Berlucchi was around 13 years old. This experience helped strengthen his interest in photography and cinematography.
By the time he finished high school, Berlucchi had decided to pursue cinematography as a career. He began gaining practical experience in Michigan's film industry, learning about camera equipment, lighting and production techniques.
Career and Professional Journey
Berlucchi began working in the film industry in production and camera-department roles. One of his early opportunities came when Michigan introduced incentives for film productions, creating more work for local crews. He worked at a camera rental house and joined a production crew as a best boy grip, a position involving lighting equipment and support for the cinematography department.
During this period, he learned from experienced cinematographers, including Peter Deming, Phedon Papamichael and Matthew Libatique. He also shot music videos to develop his portfolio. In 2010, he moved to New York to pursue further opportunities as a cinematographer.
Berlucchi later worked on projects involving artists such as Robert Wilson, Marina Abramović and Lady Gaga. His work in television helped establish his reputation, particularly after he joined the FX comedy series You're the Worst during its third season. He continued working on the show through its fifth season.
