Biography
Michael Spierig is a German-born Australian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer best known for his work alongside his identical twin brother, Peter Spierig. Together, they are widely recognized as the “Spierig Brothers,” known for creating visually inventive science-fiction and horror films. Michael was born on April 29, 1976, in Buchholz, Germany. When he was young, his family moved to Australia, where he spent most of his childhood and later pursued higher education. He studied graphic design at the Queensland College of Art while Peter focused on film and television studies.
Michael and Peter developed an interest in filmmaking at an early age after experimenting with their father’s video camera. They began making short films as teenagers and later entered the advertising industry, directing numerous television commercials while refining their filmmaking skills. Their early creative work earned recognition at local festivals and helped establish their reputation in Australia’s film industry.
Michael Spierig’s feature film career began with the low-budget zombie horror-comedy Undead (2003), which he co-wrote, co-directed, and produced with his brother. The film achieved international festival success and was distributed in dozens of countries. They followed this with Daybreakers (2010), a vampire thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, which gained attention for its stylish visuals and imaginative storytelling.
The Spierig Brothers earned widespread critical acclaim with Predestination (2014), a science-fiction thriller based on a story by Robert Heinlein. The film, starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook, became one of their most celebrated works due to its complex narrative and thoughtful exploration of time travel. Michael later co-directed Jigsaw (2017), part of the popular Saw franchise, and the supernatural horror film Winchester (2018), starring Helen Mirren.
Throughout his career, Michael Spierig has been recognized for blending horror, science fiction, and suspense with strong visual storytelling.
