Lekh Tandon

Biography

Lekh Tandon (13 February 1929 – 15 October 2017) was an Indian film director, screenwriter, actor, and mentor who made significant contributions to Hindi cinema and television. Best known for directing acclaimed films such as Professor (1962), Amrapali (1966), and Jhuk Gaya Aasman (1968), he was admired for his sensitive storytelling and ability to bring out memorable performances from actors.

Early Life

Lekh Tandon was born on 13 February 1929 in Lahore, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). Following the Partition of India in 1947, he moved to India and pursued a career in the film industry.

Career

Tandon began his career in the 1950s as an assistant director and production executive. He worked with some of the leading filmmakers of the era before making his directorial debut. His films often combined romance, drama, and strong emotional themes, earning both critical and commercial success.

He directed several popular Hindi films and worked with many of Bollywood's biggest stars, including Shammi Kapoor, Vyjayanthimala, Rajendra Kumar, Sadhana, Rajesh Khanna, and Amitabh Bachchan.

In later years, Tandon became active in television, directing serials and mentoring a new generation of filmmakers. He also appeared as an actor in several films, including Swades (2004), in which he portrayed Dadaji, earning widespread appreciation.
