Biography

Kumkum was a popular Indian actress and dancer who appeared primarily in Hindi films during the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. Best known for her graceful screen presence and lively performances, she acted in more than 100 films and shared the screen with many of the leading stars of her era.

Born as Zaibunnissa on 22 April 1934 in Hussainabad, Sheikhpura district, Bihar, India, Kumkum developed an interest in dance and acting from an early age. She entered the film industry with small roles before gaining recognition after appearing in the song "Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar" from Aar Paar (1954). Her breakthrough as a leading actress came with Mr. X in Bombay (1964) opposite Kishore Kumar.

Over the course of her career, Kumkum appeared in numerous successful films, including Mother India (1957), Ujala (1959), Kohinoor (1960), Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960), Aankhen (1968), Geet (1970), Lalkar (1972), and Raja Jani (1972). She also worked extensively in Bhojpuri cinema, where she became one of the industry's earliest and most admired leading actresses, notably starring in Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1963), the first Bhojpuri feature film.

Kumkum was admired for her versatility, effortlessly portraying lead heroines, supporting characters, and memorable dance performances. She worked with leading filmmakers and actors of her time, earning a respected place in Indian cinema.

After retiring from films in the 1970s, Kumkum lived a private life away from the spotlight.

She passed away on 28 July 2020 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 86. Kumkum is remembered for her long and successful career, her contributions to both Hindi and Bhojpuri cinema, and her enduring charm on screen.
