Biography

Kishore Kumar was one of the most versatile and celebrated artists in Indian cinema. Born as Abhas Kumar Ganguly on 4 August 1929 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, he became famous as a playback singer, actor, composer, producer, director, and screenwriter. His extraordinary talent and unique voice made him one of the most beloved figures in the history of Hindi cinema.

 

 

Kishore Kumar was born into a Bengali family and was the younger brother of actor Ashok Kumar. Although he initially entered the film industry as an actor, music soon became his true calling. He made his acting debut in Shikari (1946) and gained popularity with films such as Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Half Ticket (1962), and Padosan (1968). His comic timing and energetic performances earned him admiration from audiences across India.

 

 

As a playback singer, Kishore Kumar rose to immense fame during the late 1960s and 1970s. His breakthrough came with the song “Roop Tera Mastana” from Aradhana (1969), which established him as one of Bollywood’s leading voices. He became the preferred playback singer for actors such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and worked with renowned music directors including S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

 

 

Known for his expressive singing and yodeling style, Kishore Kumar recorded thousands of songs in Hindi as well as several regional languages. His songs ranged from romantic melodies and soulful ballads to lively and comic numbers, showcasing his remarkable versatility.

 

Apart from singing and acting, Kishore Kumar also directed and produced films, proving his creativity in multiple areas of filmmaking. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer eight times, a record during his era.
