Kalpana Kartik (born Mona Singha; 19 September 1931) is a retired Indian actress who appeared in Hindi films during the 1950s. Best known for her performances opposite Dev Anand, she starred in several successful films produced by Navketan Films. Although her acting career was brief, she earned recognition for her graceful screen presence and natural performances.

 

 

Early Life

Kalpana Kartik was born as Mona Singha on 19 September 1931 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, British India. She completed her education at St. Bede's College in Shimla before moving into modeling. Her striking personality and elegance brought her to the attention of filmmaker Chetan Anand, who introduced her to the Hindi film industry under the screen name Kalpana Kartik.

 

 

Career

Kalpana Kartik made her acting debut in Baazi (1951), directed by Guru Dutt and starring Dev Anand. The film was a major success and established her as a promising actress.

She went on to appear in several notable films, including Aandhiyan (1952), Taxi Driver (1954), House No. 44 (1955), Nau Do Gyarah (1957), and Kala Pani (1958). Most of her films were produced by Navketan Films, and she became one of the popular leading ladies of the production house.

 

Her on-screen pairing with Dev Anand was particularly well received by audiences. She was admired for her understated acting style, elegance, and ability to portray sincere and relatable characters.

 

 

Personal Life

During the shooting of Taxi Driver (1954), Kalpana Kartik married Dev Anand in a private ceremony. The couple had two children, including filmmaker Suniel Anand.

Following her marriage and the success of Kala Pani (1958), Kalpana Kartik retired from acting to focus on her family. She has since maintained a private life away from the public eye.
