Biography

I. V. Sasi (1948–2017) was a celebrated Indian filmmaker who predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. He was one of the most prolific and influential directors in the industry, known for making films across genres including drama, romance, action, crime and social subjects.

Born on 28 March 1948 in West Bengal, I. V. Sasi began his career in cinema as an art director and later worked as an assistant director before establishing himself as an independent filmmaker. He made his directorial debut with Utsavam in 1975.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he directed a remarkable number of successful films and became a major figure in Malayalam commercial cinema. He frequently collaborated with leading actors such as Mammootty, Mohanlal, Seema and Jayan. His notable films include Avalude Ravukal, Angadi, Ee Nadu, Athirathram, Devasuram, Aalkkoottathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukukal.

I. V. Sasi was particularly known for his ability to combine commercial entertainment with strong social themes. Several of his films explored class differences, politics, family relationships, crime and the struggles of ordinary people.

His collaborations with writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair and actor Mammootty produced several acclaimed films and became an important part of Malayalam cinema's history. He also directed films in other Indian languages, including Hindi and Tamil.

Over his career, I. V. Sasi received several honours, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam for Aalkkoottathil Thaniye and the J. C. Daniel Award for his contribution to Malayalam cinema.

I. V. Sasi died on 24 October 2017 in Chennai at the age of 69. He is remembered as one of the most important directors of Malayalam cinema, with a vast body of work that helped shape the industry's commercial and artistic traditions.
