Hemanta Mukherjee (16 June 1920 – 26 September 1989), also known as Hemant Kumar in Hindi cinema, was one of India's most celebrated playback singers, music directors, composers, and film producers. Renowned for his deep, velvety voice, he made an enduring impact on both Bengali and Hindi music and is regarded as one of the greatest singers in Indian cinema.

Born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal, Hemanta Mukherjee began his musical career in the 1930s. He rose to prominence as a playback singer in Bengali films before becoming a leading voice in Hindi cinema. His soulful singing and memorable compositions earned him widespread admiration across generations.

As a music director, Hemanta Mukherjee composed scores for several acclaimed films, including Nagin, Jagriti, Bees Saal Baad, Kohraa, and Khamoshi. As a playback singer, he lent his voice to countless timeless songs for leading actors, collaborating with legendary composers and lyricists throughout his career.
