C.V. Balakrishnan

Biography

C. V. Balakrishnan is an Indian writer, novelist and screenwriter who works primarily in Malayalam. Born on 24 September 1952 in Payyanur, Kerala, he is regarded as an important figure in contemporary Malayalam literature.

He has written more than 60 literary works, including novels, short stories, essays, travel writing and screenplays. His best-known novel is Ayussinte Pusthakam, which is considered an important work of modern Malayalam literature. Other notable works include Kamamohitham, Disa and Atmavinu Sariyennu Thonnunna Karyangal.

Balakrishnan has also made significant contributions to Malayalam cinema as a screenwriter and story writer. His film credits include Mattoral (1988), Puravrutham (1988), Irattakuttikalude Achan (1997), Kattathoru Penpoovu (1998), Kottaram Veettile Apputtan (1998), Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal (2000), Orma Mathram (2011) and Vellivelichathil (2014).

His screenplay and story work often explores family relationships, loneliness, human emotions and social realities. His screenplay for Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal, directed by Sathyan Anthikad, is among his notable contributions to Malayalam cinema.

Balakrishnan has received several major literary honours, including three Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards, as well as the Kerala State Film Award for Best Book on Cinema for Cinemayude Idangal in 2002. He was also awarded the Padmaprabha Literary Award in 2014.

Through his extensive literary output and contributions to cinema, C. V. Balakrishnan has established himself as a respected novelist, short-story writer and screenwriter in Malayalam.
