Carlos José Alvarez

Biography

Carlos José Alvarez is an American film composer, percussionist, music producer, and arranger known for creating music for feature films, documentaries, and television. Born on December 21, 1979, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he grew up in a Cuban-American family in South Florida. His early exposure to Cuban music and classical orchestral music played an important role in shaping his musical career.

Early Life and Education

Alvarez developed an interest in music at a young age and began playing percussion as a child. At the age of 12, he was accepted into a performing arts school, where he studied symphonic percussion, piano, and music theory. During high school, he also performed with orchestras in South Florida.

He later attended Florida State University, where he continued studying percussion and composition. After completing his studies, he received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Film Scoring. In 2005, he was awarded a conducting fellowship that allowed him to study in Athens, Greece, under conductor Michalis Economou.

Career in Film Music

Alvarez began building his career as a composer for film and television, combining orchestral music with his knowledge of percussion and different musical traditions. His first major composing opportunity came with the 2009 supernatural thriller Deadline, starring Brittany Murphy and Thora Birch.

Over the years, he has composed music for numerous feature films. His credits include Of Mind and Music, Exposed, The Road Dance, Find Me Falling, Locked In, and Cubamerican. His score for The Road Dance was particularly notable, with the film receiving strong critical recognition.

Television and Documentary Work

In addition to feature films, Alvarez has created music for documentaries and television productions. One of his notable projects was Netflix's six-part documentary series Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami. His work on the series earned him a 2022 Imagen Award nomination for music composition.

His documentary credits also include Revolution Rent, Mossville: Where Great Trees Fall, 13 Million Voices, Desert Angel, and Cubamerican. He has also contributed music to productions such as Still Alice, Man in the Arena, and Netflix's One Day at a Time.

Work as a Producer and Arranger

Beyond composing, Alvarez has worked as a music producer and arranger. He has collaborated with established performers, including Mexican singer Ana Gabriel and Broadway performer Janet Dacal. His work therefore extends beyond film scoring into music production and live performance.

One of his most personal projects involved his grandmother, Cuban singer Angela Álvarez. Carlos produced and arranged her original songs for her debut album, helping her fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a recording artist. The album received international attention, and Angela Álvarez later won the 2022 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist, becoming the oldest recipient of that award. Carlos also served as a producer on the documentary Miss Angela, which explored her extraordinary life.

Musical Style and Legacy

Carlos José Alvarez approaches film composition as a form of storytelling. His music combines orchestral traditions with Latin and Cuban influences, while his background as a percussionist gives his scores a distinctive rhythmic character. His work across drama, documentary, thriller, and television projects demonstrates his versatility as a composer.

With a career spanning film, television, documentary, and music production, Alvarez has established himself as a versatile composer whose work helps shape the emotional atmosphere and storytelling of screen productions.
