Biography

A. V. Meiyappan (28 July 1907 – 12 August 1979), popularly known as A. V. M., was an Indian film producer, director, entrepreneur, and the founder of AVM Productions, one of India's oldest and most successful film production companies. A visionary filmmaker, he played a pivotal role in shaping South Indian cinema and produced landmark films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Early Life

A. V. Meiyappan was born on 28 July 1907 in Karaikudi, in present-day Tamil Nadu, India. He was born into a business family and initially assisted in the family's trading business. His passion for entertainment led him to the gramophone record business before he entered film production.

Career

Meiyappan began his journey in cinema in the 1930s and established AVM Productions in 1945. Under his leadership, the studio became one of the most respected production houses in India, known for technical excellence, strong storytelling, and commercial success.

He produced films in multiple Indian languages and introduced several actors, directors, musicians, and technicians who later became major figures in Indian cinema. His productions ranged from mythological and social dramas to family entertainers and musical hits.
