Early Life and Education
Born on October 15, 1979, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Ashwiny grew up in a Tamil-speaking family in the suburb of Mulund. She completed her schooling at St. Mary's Convent High School and pursued higher studies at SIES College of Commerce and Economics. A gold medalist in Applied Arts from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, she initially embarked on a career in advertising.
Career in Advertising
Ashwiny spent over 15 years at the renowned advertising agency Leo Burnett, where she rose to the position of Executive Creative Director. During her tenure, she directed over 300 commercials and garnered numerous accolades, including Cannes Lions, New York Festival, One Show, Promax, and Goafest awards. Her work was noted for its layered ideas and deep understanding of human psychology at the grassroots level.
Transition to Filmmaking
Driven by a passion for storytelling, Ashwiny transitioned to filmmaking with her debut feature film "Nil Battey Sannata" in 2016. The film received critical acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. She also directed its Tamil remake, "Amma Kanakku," the same year.
Her subsequent film, "Bareilly Ki Barfi" (2017), a romantic comedy-drama, was both a critical and commercial success, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Director. In 2020, she directed "Panga," a sports drama featuring Kangana Ranaut, which was praised for its empowering narrative.
Literary Pursuits
Expanding her creative horizons, Ashwiny ventured into writing with her debut fiction novel, "Mapping Love," published in August 2021. The novel was well-received for its evocative storytelling and emotional depth.
