Ari Aster was born on July 15, 1986, in New York City. He spent part of his childhood in Santa Fe, where his father was a musician, and his mother worked as a poet.

Aster developed an interest in filmmaking at a young age and later studied film at the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles. During his studies, he created several short films that showcased his unusual storytelling style.
