Amiya Chakrabarty was an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter who made significant contributions to Hindi cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. He was known for directing socially relevant and emotionally engaging films that combined strong storytelling with memorable music.
He began his career as an assistant to renowned filmmaker Himanshu Rai at Bombay Talkies before establishing himself as an independent director. Some of his best-known films include Basant (1942), Patita (1953), Daag (1952), Seema (1955), and Kathputli (1957). His films often featured leading stars such as Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Nargis, Nutan, Balraj Sahni, and Vyjayanthimala.
Amiya Chakrabarty was widely respected for his realistic approach to filmmaking and his ability to blend social themes with mainstream entertainment. He passed away on 6 November 1957, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Indian cinema.
