Aaroor Dass
Biography
Aaroor Dass (1931–2024) was an Indian screenwriter, dialogue writer and director who predominantly worked in Tamil cinema. He was regarded as one of the prominent writers of Tamil films and was known for his emotionally rich stories and memorable dialogues.
Born Yesudas in Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, Aaroor Dass entered the film industry in the 1950s. He began his career as an assistant to writer A. S. A. Sami and later established himself as a successful screenwriter and dialogue writer.
He worked with some of the biggest stars and filmmakers in Tamil cinema, including Sivaji Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran, Gemini Ganesan and K. Balaji. He wrote dialogues and screenplays for numerous successful films, contributing to both commercial and socially themed cinema.
Among his notable writing credits are Pasamalar (1961), Annai (1962), Deiva Magan (1969) and several films featuring Sivaji Ganesan and M. G. Ramachandran. He also directed films during his career, including Penn Endral Penn and other Tamil productions.
Aaroor Dass received recognition for his contribution to Tamil cinema and was respected for his command of language and ability to convey emotion through dialogue.
He died on 20 November 2024, leaving behind a significant body of work that remains an important part of Tamil film history.
