In 1979, Pakistan, following the imposition of martial law by General Zia-ul-Haq, was declared a Muslim state within a few months. Ayesha, a well-adjusted woman in her forties, dedicates her life to educating her 17-year-old son, Salim, in the small village of Charkhi in the Pakistani Punjab. Salim is a quiet dreamer, but the rapidly changing political climate leaves Ayesha anxious, as she notices her son transforming in ways she barely recognizes.
